The better toolbox: experimental methodology in economics and psychology

چکیده
Abstract In experimental economics one can confront a “don’t!”, as in “do not deceive your participants!”, well “do!”, “incentivize choice making!”. Neither exists psychology. Further controversies exist data collection methods, e.g., play strategy (vector) method game experiments, and how to guarantee external internal validity by describing scenarios field-related vignettes or abstract, often formal, rules it is used decision theory. We emphasize that differences between the methodology of two disciplines are minor rather than substantial suggest such should be resolved, much possible, through empirical research. Rather focusing on familiar debates, we substitute revealed-motive approach designs whose only inform about choice, but also reasoning dynamics.

Experimental economics and social psychology share an interest in a widening subset of topics, relying on similar lab-based methods to address similar questions about human behavior, yet dialogue between the two fields remains in its infancy. We propose a framework for understanding this disconnect: The different approaches the disciplines take to translating real-world behavior into the labora...

Laboratory experiments have generally supported the theorem that, in classical property rights environments, noncooperative behavior in markets yields efficient social outcomes. Experiments, however, regularly fail to support the game theoretic prediction of noncooperative behavior in small-group strategic interaction and in large-group public good environments. In these two types of experiment...
